Just when you thought it was safe to call Rudy the clear front-runner... look who's entering the race, stage right, of course: Fred Thompson. The man with the gravelly Southern drawl and gravitas that's been practiced on stage on and both the small and big screen will soon stand side-by-side with all the other Presidential wannabees.

But he really does stand alone: he's a true conservative, a Baptist from the bible belt of Tennessee who has not flipped and flopped, like Mitt Romney, or straddled the fence, like Rudy Giuliani. And Evangelicals are sure he's not a born-again conservative.

Thompson will hit the campaign trail sometime in July. The question: Can he convince America that he's more than a TV star? Probably. Who would've thunk that Minnesota could elect Jesse Ventura, and California Arnold Schwarzenegger? Yes, the Presidency is a bigger job, but that actor Ronald Reagan managed just fine.

Mayor Giuliani was the clear winner of the last Republican debate, and will probably stick to the same script. Last time out, Romney and John McCain crossed swords on campaign financing. Look for Rudy to become a target this time, and not just from the wacky Congressman Ron Paul.

But no matter what happens Tuesday in New Hampshire, it's already been over-shadowed by the big man from Tennessee who's waiting in the wings.

On the Democratic side, you can follow Hillary Clinton's campaign at our Clinton Tracker.

Fred Thompson, I think, he's a level headed, down to earth true Republican. Fred did a stand in for Paul Harvey a while back. I liked his take on the topics he covered for the week and I'd like to hear more. He's got a long road to hoe, but if he makes it through the crowd, I'm pretty sure he's my man. He has less baggage than the rest but also less experience. Still if he hires the right advisors and Cabinet it's a momentary problem.

Dick Brennan is Fox 5's political reporter. From City Hall to Albany, from Trenton to the White House, from elections to inaugurations, Dick has provided award-winning political coverage for Fox 5. This is his third Presidential race. He covered the incredible nail-biting election of Bush v. Gore... right through to decisive Supreme Court ruling that decided who would be the 43rd President of the United States. Again in 2004, the race was not decided on election night, and the next day, Dick was in Washington, as Senator John Kerry finally conceded defeat. Dick has traveled the world. He covered the war in Iraq as U.S. troops invaded. He reported from the West Bank on the funeral of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. And he spent months at Ground Zero after September 11th. The 2004 Republican National Convention was held in New York City. Inside Madison Square Garden, the GOP re-nominated the President. Outside, the NYPD battled protestors and the possibility of another terror attack. Dick reported every aspect of the story, and his work earned him a 2005 Emmy award for outstanding coverage. Dick's journalism career began in 5th grade at St. Anastasia's school in Little Neck, Queens, where he edited the school newspaper and demanded full editorial control for the students. Sister Irmalita found another editor. Dick attended Archbishop Molloy High School in Queens and Fordham University in the Bronx. At college station WFUV, he hosted a political talk show and even managed to interview Ronald Reagan's defense secretary, Caspar Weinberger. He also interrogated Gen. William Westmoreland, the commanding general in Vietnam. Westmoreland walked out on the interview, and called Dick "a young, arrogant sonofab----." Mike Wallace would have been proud. In 2000, Dick was ready to cover the U.S. Senate race between Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani. It never happened. But the ultimate Presidential race for a New York reporter, Hillary versus Rudy, could be a few months away. Dick will keep you informed up to the minute!
