If all of us just did a few small things in our lives, whether it be changing a few light bulbs or bringing cloth bags to bag our groceries, we'd be making a significant impact on our environment. What small steps are you taking in your life?

We switched from paper napkins to cloth napkins. Each family member has their unique colored napkin ring, so we can reuse a couple of times before washing.

I recently went to the Shedd aquarium to produce a story about all their "green" practices.
INSPIRING, is the best way to sum up my experience there.
They take big steps and small ones doing every little thing they can to conserve and recycle.
One of the things I am most excited about is the Worm Composting.
You could have a bin to do the composting under your desk, it won't smell, it gets rid of your food scraps and the worms (red wigglers) will create rich fertilizer with their castings (poop).
Yep, I am in awe by the power of worm poop.

While I don't have a lawn now to enrich with this fertilizer, I would recommend it to anyone who does, because I also found out- this worm poop is actually expensive!

And you can create it for free, while reducing how much waste you toss out ..
Just think if everyone did this how much food would be kept out of our landfills.
Instead it would be broken down by little worms who can eat their body weight in a day!
You can also toss some paper towel rolls , or toliet paper rolls or even newspaper into your worm bin.
Another way to reduce your waste.
Very cool, very easy and very productive.

We changed out all of our light bulbs, I also installed Solar Hot Water Heater 8 yrs ago. It was one of the best things I've done, I installed a 100gal hot water heater with 1 Element for back up on really cold or cloudy days, we turn it on about 3days ayear. we always have more hot water than we can use saving an average of $50.00 a month, I also put Solar heat on my pool and can bring the water temp to 122* in the summer if needed, during the winter we open our doors and windows to our indoor pool and the heat from the pool heats our house, you can save money if your put your mind to it...

I also use low watt bulbs, turn off the air when im away and a couple place in my home I dont even have a bulb!!! An example would be if I turn on a switch at the bottom of the stairs a bulb goes on at the bottom and the top! one bulb at the bottom gives off enough light and if someone forgets the switch on only one bulb will be using power!!!

I drink tap water at home!! It makes a huge difference... bottled water creates tons of unnecessary garbage every year. Plus, a study done by the Earth Policy Institute says bottled water usually isn't healthier than tap water. So, if you have access to healthy tap water... why spend all the extra money... and create more garbage?

And when I go to work... I try my best to remember my water bottle and refill it throughout the day.

It's one way I try to help the environment in my daily life... it's also a great way to save money :)

I try and use the stairs as much as possible (especially going down stairs) at work to avoid the waste of the elevator running for me to hop a floor.

I make sure to turn off lights and electronics when not in use. I go as far as un plugging everything that has a timer, clock, etc. I also stopped running water through out shaving, and brushing. I purchased energy star air conditioners, and don't keep the TV on through out the night anymore.

sarah -- this high-fashion bottled water craze is the funniest thing I've seen in years. Paying money for filtered tap water! It's hilarious!

I bought a Brita filtered water jug system several years ago, and I'll put the quality and taste of its water up against any bottled water on the market today. And I'm spending pennies as opposed to dollars.

I keep the jug in the fridge and pour water from it to daily-use bottles. That way, I always have a supply of delicious water to drink.

I recommend the system highly to anyone who is interested in quality water that costs pennies.

I love this - everyone really is trying to conserve, whether it be bags, bulbs, energy, etc. YOU really can make a difference. The only thing I am not crazy about is the composting. I will have to lead up to that..... thank you all!

I've changed the lightbulbs that I use the most in the house to the energy efficient ones.
At work, I constantly turn off lights in the offices not being used.

My wife and I save on electricity by changing every bulb to low energy bulbs. These small compact fluorescent bulbs use much less energy than the conventional light bulb. There are other bulbs out there that use even less energy like LED bulbs, but the fluorescents work for our needs. We also don't leave any lights on anywhere we aren't using the light. We have purchased low energy consuming appliances. We unplug anything with a transformer inside the product when not in use. And we will be adding a 3kwh solar panel system on the house soon. This system will be grid tied so the energy we don't use during the day will go to neighbors and we'll get paid for it from ComEd !!
Water is saved around out house by just simple steps like a new low water usage cloths washing machine and dish washer, not taking loooong showers, not watering the lawn, (if you know a little about plants, grass is a prairie plant and will go into hibernation under low water periods and will return lush and green just as before). When we wash the car, and that's rare, we don't allow the hose to just run. Fill a bucket, wash, rinse and be done.
Natural Gas is saved buy not burning the fireplace just for the look. Turning down the hot water tank temp a few degrees. Not setting the heat at 75 in the winter. Having extra insulation through-out the house, Better windows with thermo insulating pains, just to name a few things. We will be installing a solar heating system soon.
But our biggest savings and conservation was when I converted a 1994 Saturn SL1 to all electric. There is no gas in
