Some of you might have heard the names Maroon 5, No Doubt and Green Day, just to mention a few.  Pretty successful bunch, wouldn’t you say?  What do they have in common, besides being successful?  They’re all indie groups!

 What are “Indie groups”???

They are bands / artists who are, simply, looking to make it in music.  As we all know, it is extremely difficult to not only score a record contract, but to also find an audience…especially with all the competition out there.  At one time, they had to depend on managers and agents to do all of this for them.  But thanks to the internet, and pages like Myspace, these really hard-working performers are getting it done by themselves.  AND BOY DO THEY DESERVE A LOT OF CREDIT!!!

For more than two years now, I have been doing an online podcast called “State of Independence”, where I get to play music by some very talented future superstars of music.  So far, I am hearing the next Maroon 5, No Doubt and Green Day…heck, I’m even hearing the new Rolling Stones, Aerosmith and Pat Benatar!!  These people are so dedicated and hard-working, not to mention extremely talented, that I’m also featuring them on my other internet radio shows sandwiched in with all the more established artists and bands…and ya know something?  They belong there!

So, I’ll be doing weekly music blogs, covering other areas along with spotlighting the Indies.  And there will be NO GOSSIP!!!  I promise you!!  I could care less about who’s having a baby, or who’s getting a divorce, blah-blah-blah...to me, that has NOTHING to do WHATSOEVER with music, or with a person’s talent!  PERIOD!!

In the meantime do check out my radio shows and all other info about me and the bands I play on my websites.

Nice Blog. I have a question. If an "Indie" group makes it big, gets an album and concert tours, etc...Are they still "Indie" I'm guessing no, but I'm not sure. I always found that describing any group as "Indie" is quite ironic. Band members are dependent on each other, their fans, etc. How can any musician or musical group be independent or "Indie" when they are trying to make money as a musician?

it's a mixed statement..

A band is/can be considered a "Indie" group even if they are signed to a label. Most majors have a Indie sub section that goes out and finds up and coming bands. Those bands are considered independent of the parent company...

the parent company "major" only helps with distributing the record.. but it is the indie sub section that does all the work for the band... (promo, recording, tour support, what ever)

Alot of alternative bands/artists are actually still considered "indies" mainly because they have their own unique sound, even though they score deals with major record companies and are known all around the world.

Welcome! And if you haven't figured it out already, my name is Jamm'n Jay. I have been a professional radio DJ (ISIS Radio on www.isisradio.net and State of Independence on www.clickcaster.com/jammn
jay)and Music Commentator for about 10 years now. Through the experience, I have concocted my own idea for a slightly different type of broadcasting through the miracle of podcasting and internet radio. I launched I-SIS Radio early in 2006, which I actually first brainstormed several years before, after watching how women have been somewhat short-changed in the world of radio broadcasting. "Jamm'n Jay's State of Independence" is a show featuring all indie and up-and-coming bands and artists. ISIS Radio is an eclectic mix of shows featuring music from the 70's, 80's, 90's and today, minus the bubblegum. Here's some semi-personal info about your's truly. I have a great love and passion for music. I was exposed to music at a very early age, my father being a musician himself in a rock band. Also, my mother's love of classic movie musicals, not to mention my love for MTV and Top 40 radio. I once dabbled in acting and singing, but soon realized that my true calling was in broadcasting. Walking around tape-recording my everyday life might have helped. My favorite styles of music include rock, rock/pop, alternative rock, classic rock, new wave, R&B, hip-hop, classic soul, indie rock. I have been a die-hard animal lover my whole life, which is never going to stop. I believe in being good and kind to all people, not judging others, having an open mind, being creative, never being afraid to show your true colors, being strong and fighting for what one believes in, being free, having goals and ambitions, having a sense of humor, and finding beauty in e
