Like many New Yorkers, I have no problem with police, fireman court officers etc. using either legal parking permits or union signs to help them park so that they can do their jobs. However, this story is an example of the degree of abuse that can go on.
It would be best for union members to stop handing out these things to people who shouldn't have them because the more we do stories like this, the more heat will be placed on the mere use of the parking signs/permits in the first place.
At least in my world, there are certain courtesies that should be extended to people who wear badges  but if they allow people to in effect impersonate someone with a badge by being too generous with their parking signs they could in the end loose their perk,

A NJ thing too...

Across the street from me is a house occupied by 20 or more people from Pakistan. They have a 6-car driveway, but prefer to park all of their cars in front of my house so they can have a clear driveway.
Overnight parking on the street is not allowed in this town, but for some reason they are allowed to park on the street in front of my house, but if I or anyone else parks in front of my house overnight we/they get a ticket.
Even in deep snow today, they are parked in front of my house, and the plow goes around their car; no ticket given.
When I questioned the police station of why my sister got a ticket parking in front of my house, when the the people across the street never got one, their reply was:
In our town, you can call the police station and request special permission to park on street overnight, but that would be for that night only.
I doubt that the people across the street call every night.
I wonder what the trade off could be.

And what about the diplomats? They think the law doesn't apply to them. And if they do get tickets, they don't pay them!
