There are certain things that can get really ugly if you make a mistake. Hand grenades come to mind. So do signs, especially signs that are supposed to tell you where you are. It appears that it was a simple mistake that turned Shore Parkway in Bensonhurst into Shore Road (which is actually in Bay Ridge), but can you imagine how stupid this would seem in your neighborhood?

I grew up on Cherry Lane in Smithtown and if someone made a sign that said Cherry Street or Cherry Drive, my mom probably would have started a riot or at the very least she would have gone into a monologue about how stupid the person was who made the sign.

At this point, I'd like to know if this is a one-time deal. This company is eventually installing thousands of new bus shelters around the city. Please let me know if you see any goofs and we'll check it out.

This story is a great example of how money is wasted in the city. Since when did we need street signs on bus stops? Don't we already have street signs on the streets? Of course we do, as you rightly pointed out in your story. A quick drive around our city will show even the most casual observer that most bus stops do not have street signs on them. I am now waiting for the city to mandate that toilets have a "sit here" sign on the seat, subway doors have an "enter here" sign on the doors, and sandwhiches have a "bite me" sign attached to a toothpick in the bread.

I love the "bite me" idea"

Thanks. Every once in a while, I come up with a good one. Nice to see you in Brooklyn back around my old stomping grounds. I spent many a good summer night down by Caesar's Bay back in high school and even in later years when I lived on 80th street. It's a great place to run, bike and fish as well.

Daniel,

How many bodies did you fish out during your years on the bay?

Haha! John, we didn't fish them OUT! We only engaged in educational and peaceful activities.

Hi John....

I missed your segment on signs last night, but hopefully they will be more aware of the problem now.
One thing I don't get is that even in the smallest of towns, there is a variation of the same name, such as "Jackson Street" and "Jackson Ave" or "Church Lane and Church Street".
Do they do this just to confuse people? I'm sure they could think of new names if they put their thinking caps on.

At the corner of West Houston Street in SoHo a sign was hung for Mercer St yesterday. The only problem was, the sign said Merser St. When someone pointed this out to the city worker putting it up, he indicated, "I'm just doing my job."

Interesting,

Are you a really an Amazing Met from '69 or just a fan. One time believe or not, when I was doing sports in Miami Jerry Grote called me to chew me out because I was having fun with a collision bang bang play at the plate!

This is insane! I can't believe they misspelled Mercer. Uneducated people are running the government, what can we do?

By the way, Daniel/Santus or Daniel Sanctus, they would have to put a disclaimer on the toothpick because someone is liable to take a bit out of it and then sue. Didn't something similar happen a few years back with McDonald's? A woman put her coffee cup between her legs as she was driving and she squeezed her thighs together to pop off the cap and the coffee spilled out and scalded her. She sued and now McDonald's warns that the coffee is hot.
