This latest investigation was pretty simple. The dad owes more than $10,000 in child support, and despite the fact he has a job he hasn't paid.

Not only that, it looks like he lied twice on his application to maintain his license as a barber. He honestly believes that what the court says doesn't mean anything and he knows how to take care of his kids.

One part of this story that doesn't translate on television is how cute and smart his little girl is. When she came home and we were there with her mom, I introduced my photographer.

"This is Alan," I said.

"Hello Alan, how are you?" she replied, with all the politeness and grace of a sophisticated woman.

That's what these stories are all about -- the kids who are getting shortchanged.

Thanks, John...Now that you're having the state take away this guy's license to earn a living, instead of $10,000.00 he owes, now he'll owe $50,000.00 and be homeless to boot....WAY TO GO, JOHN!!!

Out of all the other injustices being done to NYers out there, you picked this story?
How desperate?
Pick some topics that raise real issues, and bring about solutions we all can benefit from.
Here are some good ones:

What ever happened to the "war" on drugs? Take an undercover walk up Broadway, anywhere between 135th & 180's!! See how many offers you get.

Hard working NYers are forced to move out of their neighborhoods because of rising rents.

No Child Left Behind...
75% of NY kids are being left behind. Look into the sub par education. Run some comparisons to other school districts outside the area.

If thats the best you can do, you need help. The poor are just like the middle class on that note, next time review a report on a dead beat cop, and request the State remove him from his job. Excuse me that can not happen, right??? Check yourself..

Hey Guys,

Are you forgetting about the kid? I guarantee if this guy agreed to pay child support he wouldn't lose his license.
He apparently has no respect for the law and said so.
Please don't tell me you could care less about the kid.

This may not seem of importance to you but this reflects the reasoning for the war on drugs, the children being left behind. If everyone was doing their part we could get resolution to those community problems. This parent may become one of the NYers forced to move out of their neighborhood due to high rent and not the proper support. He had more than enough time to correct his situation. This is how children fall prey to most of the urban situations. The HOME support has failed them. This is only a small portion to the BIG picture. Maybe you haven't lived through this but there are so many children who suffer because of this...

Ny Mentor,

In our special projects unit most of the stories are called in or e mailed in from the public. When people are frustrated by the system they call us.

We just did a major story on rising rents and how it is pushing all of the mom and pop neighborhood places out of business.

We've done countless stories on how horible the school system is. You just need to watch more.
Some of your ideas are good newspaper stories but not good tv stories.

but thanks for your critique

John,

This makes you lokk heartless. The guy says he has 7 other children. If they are depending on his biz to feed them, you may have done a great injustice to society if the state takes his license away. WE WANT TO KNOW WHAT'S UP WITH THE OTHER 7 CHILDREN..

I have no sympathy for a man that will steal from his own little girl. Child support is rightfully hers.

Tom.

Please look at the story again. I said that people who owe child support can get a conditional license. They keep their license under the condition they pay.
Heartless? Here's a guy who was convicted of attempted robbery, burgulary and grand larceny how about those victims? I'm heartless?
How about working 16 hours a day, multiple jobs like many people do in this city to meet their obligations.
We live in different worlds Tom even though we are both from Long Island.

HI John. You can't always Blame the man in all these situations.. Ask first "what was their relationship like?..Or ..didn't she know he had 7 other kids before she went out with him and got pregnant. do you have PROOF that he's not telling the truth by saying he gives her mother cash in her hands? What if SHE'S the one lying to get this guy into trouble now that he seems to be on his feet. I'm not defending anyone but give us all the information you want our opinion. If you want, I'll send the little girl $20.00 a month to help her out for a while, but in her name, not the mother's.

javiergemini72,
it doesn't matter what his relationship was with her mother nor which child she is, the issue at hand is to secure her needs. This lady has obviously done her part in taking care this child for 8 years...Sometimes you have to stand up and be a man about the entire situation...it is sad that he would lie about giving cash in hand...everyone knows with a court case it's CHECKS or money orders...He just is trying to do his part...WAKE UP MEN/WOMEN!!!

I happen to know Nicole personally. She didn't mention that he was abusive to her while she was pregnant with their daughter (which he also got arrested for). He blamed her for his having to go back to jail & has been making her pay ever since. He has never done anything except try to take Melanie away. He's nasty & vindictive. He has a few grown children that now take care of themselves. Most of his kids would say that he hasn't done anything for them. He needs a Vasectomy QUICKLY! He's not a man & he's a disgrace. When they went to court, he told the Judge that he wasn't paying anything (he used profanity & everything). Anybody that can say that she's wrong for going to the News is out of their minds. He has a job but he's not helping out financially with their daughter. Why does the mother have to do everything? We wouldn't have so many single mothers if Men would do their job. She knew he had alot of kids when they met, but what does the daughter have to do with that? Should she go without because her father has alot of kids? He doesn't take care of ANY of his kids. Should he be allowed to go out & spread his seeds without taking care of his responsibilities. The other Mothers didn't go on the news, but Nicole did. Her daughter is the issue here, not the other kids. Tom from Shirley, would you feel good about yourself knowing that you're not taking care of your kids? I've known Nicole for about 20 years. She made a bad decision when she got with him because he was a loser back then. Why should Melanie suffer? Their past relationship is NOT the issue here; Mel

Melanie is & will always be! Who care about their past relationship? What does that have to do with him not taking care of her?

To make a long story short.....nobody's dirty laundry should be aired out on national television!! This is why we have a COURT SYSTEM! Now, what if this man is riduculed constantly to the point where he flips out and hurts someone over it? Then who do we blame? We have enough violence and negativity in this world already....Settle this in court where it belongs...Nuff said.

Javier,

This isn't national television, it's Fox 5 New York. When your dirty laundry gets dirty enough to stink up the neighborhood or hurt others it gets on tv.
The court system has failed in this case.

We need to get tougher on those who willingly skirt the law, be they deadbeat dads, abusive mothers, illegal immigrants, corrupt politicians, et al.

Collectively, America is getting too much too soft. Once a vibrant nation replete with a firm backbone, a heart and a soul, it has now transitioned into a slothful giant who lumbers about aimlessly, it's citizens content to nay say morality, a strong work ethic and goodness, and yet still have the unmitigated gall to ask, "Why?'
