You probably don't want to know. If you watched my REPORT you certainly learned about all the "goodies" that could come with a used mattress. If BEDBUGS aren't enough, the thought of bodily fluids from strangers may be something to consider before you purchase a used mattress.

There is an argument that poor people can't afford a new mattress. Our germ expert, DR. PHILIP TIERNO, says that if you are really in a financial bind you should consider an inflatable mattress. He says there are many quality inflatable mattresses on the market. In addition to being free of germs and bedbugs, an inflatable mattress might even be better for your back.

Some interesting things I learned:

The recent bedbug epidemic can be attributed in part to the lack of effective pesticides. The best stuff for bedbugs was DDT, which was outlawed in the 1970s.

The NEW YORK DEPARTMENT OF STATE has the following in its materials regarding used bedding:

§385-a. Registration of sellers of used bedding.

1. Every person engaged in the sale of used bedding, including any mattress or boxspring which in its entirety is used and not repaired or renovated, shall file a notice with the Department of State which:

(a) states such person's name and address; and

(b) affirms that such used bedding has been sanitized in accordance with the standards established in regulation by the Department of State in consultation with the Department of Health

But there have never been any standards established for sanitizing used mattresses!!! Huh???

Experts tell us the only way to ensure a mattress is relatively germ- and bedbug-free is to steam it -- impractical -- or stick the entire mattress into an autoclave (oven) -- also impractical.

The company in our story claims they strip all of the material of the old mattress and basically cover the box spring with new material. Even then, there is the possibility of bedbugs and their eggs hanging out in the box spring and wooded area. Spaying it with special solutions just doesn't cut it, according to the experts.

This is a free country so you're welcome to buy a used mattress. Good luck!

I saw the story about the bed bugs. I have to say that I didn't like how Fox 5 went to that particular guys place of business and put them on TV their face, their building, these guys aree working, providing a service and apparently didn't break any laws. So, it's like if these guys weren't working, but committing crimes you'd be there with your camera reporting on how they are bums and milking the welfare system. come on guys, it's like nothing's good enough, all that matters is that you get to put a story on the news. Poor guys at the matterss place.

Ewwwww!!!

I got itchy just watching that! I wonder if those mattresses are sold as new too.
Over a year ago, I questioned my son on how he was getting mosquito bites out of season; then I checked his brand new $800. mattress for bugs several times, just to rule it out, and couldn't find any. Then I read that you can't see the bugs because they only come out at night. The way to check is to look for the stains they leave on the mattress. After they drink your blood, they spit it back out again, leaving rust-color stains on the mattress.
I checked, and the mattress did have the rust-color stains all over the sides of it. I quickly got that mattress out of the house and sprayed the whole room, before they traveled to other rooms. I wondered how they got in a new mattress, but now I wonder if these guys sell them as new after they re-upholster them.

Every time I stay at a hotel, I check the sides of the mattress for those rust stains now. If you don't check, and they are there, they could travel home with you in your suitcase without knowing it.

Great advice John!

I have been in the mattress industry for 35 years. There is no way to completely sanitize used beds. Most of these companies use a spray that is hit and miss at best. You would be surprised at how many people I have spoken to that became seriously ill after sleeping on this product. The sad part is that most consumers are never told taht beds are re-built. (RB)The only way to know is by the yellow law label and how many people know the significance of this label?

bed bugs seem to come out of nowhere, I mean how come this story didn't explain where exactly bed bugs come from? All this story said was that they don't carry infections or diseases? But WHERE do these things spawn from? It seems that we humans are to blame not the mattress people? Quick example, I used to eat on my bed, then b4 going to sleep I'd brush any crumbs off to the floor and then vacuum next day. All of a sudden I began to get bites through the nite. My wife and I purchased those pest repellent plug-in things that emit those high-pitched signals too loud for insects to bare.. I swear that after installing one on each side of my bed I have NO bites ever since. I also don't brush crumbs off my bed either.. for that I purchased a Kone vacuum.

Thanks for the comments.

Foxy Fox 5...you might have missed the part that these guys have been cited before for throwing their mattress garbage all over the sidewalk or the part that they don't have a license to operate in the city.

We showed up on a tip about the sidewalk complaint and their behavior opened a whole can of worms.
And by the way, I know New York is a melting pot of various cultures but in America you are allowed to have a camera on the sidewalk and take pictures. Some people don't realize that.

John makes a really important point, guys: No one has to answer a reporter's questions but they DO NOT have the right to push, shove, hit, or kick a reporter or a photographer who is on a PUBLIC SIDEWALK. This is one of the most BASIC rights/principles of a free country that has a free press. Where does this right come from? It's called the FIRST AMENDMENT to the United States Constitution. A bajillion court rulings have upheld this principle.

All things considered, John, thanks for responding to my comment. America IS a melting pot and in addition to that it is a very difficult country for many people to make ends meet. There are people who don't have much in the way of 'knowing people' to get jobs, we are in a recession, gas prices are through the roof and let's not get into all the people who are really fleecing this country making so much money they don't know what to do with it, some are making it illegally, others have big jobs and are involved with prostitutes, and then some guys trying to make mattresses, in what seems to be to the best of their ability.. they're the ones with the cameras in front of their faces? I just find it odd, with all the wrong things going on in the world that these guys draw the camera crews? John, please use your talents to expose the real bad guys.. not a few men making mattresses.

Thanks.

foxyfox5,

We mainly work on tips from the public. This was a situation where someone who lived in the area was offended by these mattresses blocking the public sidewalk. We went to check it out and all hell broke loose.
You make valid point about what what is going on in sociaty and if we received a tip about a dirty politcian or anything else that seemed valid we would check that out to. My beat is not about saving the world, it's about
exposing situations that are wrong and hopefully educating people along the way.

There is always someone missing the point in your blogs John; and I have to wonder if it is the same person just trying to stir you up. The senseless comparing better-to-worse tactics are always used, just different names hiding behind shadows.
A mattress is a personal thing, not to be shared with bugs against the buyers knowledge.
Anyone who sells a rebuilt mattress, knowing that it could be infested and implying that it is new, is no better than a big-shot trick in any comparison!

jmax,

Thanks for your thoughts. We've struck many nerves with stories recently and some of those people have become the TV "Police"

Even though I've never purchased a "reconditioned" used mattress, I feel like buying myself a new one this weekend! One of the most compelling questions your story brought up is who the company is selling the used mattresses to! I would love to know the answer to that question.

Daniel,

They refused to tell us that but who knows maybe we will find out.

Yeah, good question Daniel! I bought my son's mattress from "Rockaway Bedding", which is now "Sleepy's". I let him select it off their showroom floor. If it was rebuilt, they never told us, but where it was actually delivered from we will ever know. It looked new when they delivered it, but who really knows?
Here's a good question.... 1-800-Mattress advertised "Try our bed for a week, if you don't like it, we will deliver an exchange at no cost to you" .....so what do they do with the mattresses that people exchanged after the trial week?
John, you should order one, and return it after putting a GPS tracking device in it to see where it ends up.....that would be really interesting.

Jmax a conspiracy theorist eh? No, Im not one in the same with anyone.. Im a married person from New Rochelle, who just happened to be watching the news and also had a problem myself with bed bugs, the thing is this, I lived in one place with my mattress and had NO bedbugs at all, then I moved and ironically into a much cleaner co-op apt and suddenly began to experiencer bedbugs I had bites all over my legs. The thing was in my new apt. I began eating in bed more frequently so I take responsibility. The point of the show is first of all the guys being 'exposed' weren't planting bedbugs on the beds and appeared to be spraying them in accordance with mattress bug laws (if there is such a thing). This story could very well have been broke without showing anyone's faces, site of work, I personally felt that John Deutzman made a show out of it based solely on the fact that the "all hell broke loose" more than the fact that "this is an important story". I've seen so many bed bug stories already on the news.. it's a show that there's nothing going on so lets put the bed bug guys on the news.. and the fact that people who commit real crimes often intimidate people from exposing them.. I don't want to call the whole story cowardly but I would bet that john could do much more with his talents, thats all.

By the way Jmax your post about the tracking bug would be interesting and also something 'new'. But I must tell you that this is my first ever post to this forum. I have a right as much as you do to post my opinion up and you really shouldn't be 'forum police' because first of all you're not getting paid to be one, and second you are trying to smother my autonomy to freely express my opinion. If you feel you disagree with me fine, state why you do, but don't say I'm always here stirring things up because that's a cop-out and I guess I could say that you're probably Johns' wife or girlfriend too.. or how about Johns mom.. Yeah that's who you are. lol

FoxyFox5,

I'm no relation to John, but I do respect the fact that he dedicates his career to look out for the well being of other people. I don't know why anyone would defend a company that would deceive consumers, while putting their familes at risk for an infestation in their homes.
For whatever reason you think lambasting the whistle-blower is more important than the integrity of humanity, that would be the reason you appear to me to have some sort of vendetta against John. Having had bed bugs, you should appeciate that John could have an impact on the quality of your next mattress purchase.

FoxyFox5, why are you lecturing on "American is a melting pot"? This is not an immigration story, except as it pertains to transporting bedbugs.

And, just because the economy is bad, are you suggesting that it's O.K. for King Mattress to violate the law by allowing filthy, bug-infested mattresses to pile up on the sidewalk? Would you want these conditions in your neighborhood? You also seem to have undue sympathy for the business owners, and no regard whatsoever for unsuspecting (and possibly underprivileged consumers) – the ones who are most likely to buy a used mattress.

I especially appreciate the fact that John has pointed out yet another flaw in our government public health agencies, who have yet to establish sanitary guidelines that can actually be enforced. Failing that, selling used mattresses should be banned.

And that goes for futons, too, LOL!
