The string of beautiful weather we experienced last week came to an end on Sunday as clouds and showers returned to the tri-state area. This week will have its share of nice weather, but we'll also have to deal with some inclement weather. The best word to describe this week's weather is variable. The following detailed account of the next five days shows just how variable this first week of April will be.

Monday:   Today in itself will be a variable day. Cool temperatures along with clouds, fog, and a few isolated showers will make it a damp and dreary morning. The clouds and showers will gradually end, however, and sunshine will begin to break through the clouds by late morning. By this afternoon, the clouds will share the sky with plenty of sun and temperatures will rapidly climb into the 60's. Interior sections of the area could even approach 70 degrees. Near the coast, a light breeze off the ocean will allow patchy fog to hang on through much of the day. As a result, coastal areas will be much cooler and will only reach the mid 50's.

Tuesday:    The mild weather will continue on Tuesday as temperatures will reach the lower 60's across much of the area. Plenty of sunshine will combine with the mild temperatures to make it a gorgeous day. The variable theme will come to play during the afternoon, however, as clouds return and gradually thicken. Showers and even a few thunderstorms will then arrive during the evening as a southeasterly wind picks up.

Wednesday:   Wednesday will be the washout of the week as the rain and wind continue. The gusty southeasterly wind will be a chiily, damp breeze as it will be coming in from the 42 degree ocean. The rain could be heavy at times as a strong cold front wrings out the Atlantic moisture over the northeast. The cold front will cross the area by late afternoon or evening bringing an end to the rain. The dry wind behind the front will also be quite chilly, so be ready to bundle up Wednesday night!

Thursday:   Thursday will bring a return to sunshine, but a cold breeze will also bring a return to late winter. We'll start the day off in the 30's with wind chills in the 20's. High temperatures will struggle to reach the mid to upper 40's as a strong northwesterly wind brings plenty of cold air down from Canada.

Friday:    Friday will be another cold one as we'll see temperatures in the 20's to low 30's across the area during the morning. Most areas will be below freezing during the morning with a moderate breeze making it feel more like the teens and low 20's. Temperatures will struggle again into the mid 40's under a mix of sun and clouds. This chilly pattern looks like it will take hold of the area right through the weekend into early next week.

The variable theme held true yesterday, but the clouds were quite slow to burn off!! Unfortunately, the cool marine layer I discussed for coastal areas held its ground over most of the area.

Being near a 42 degree ocean can make any forecast complicated. The cold marine air is much heavier than the mild air. As a result, the mild air could not scour out the marine air yesterday. Hopefully, today will be a different story and the milder air can win out at least for one day this week. After today, we're going to lock into a chilly pattern.

And to reinforce the range in temperatures the area experienced yesterday, take a look at yesterday's high temperatures. Central Park didn't budge past 56 degrees. In SW New Jersey, Trenton hit 71 degrees. Just west of Trenton, Philadelphia hit 79 degrees!! That's right, a 23 degree difference between NYC and Philly!!!

Expect more of the same today. Eastern LI and Connecticut will be lucky to rise above 50 degrees. Southwestern NJ will make another run for 70 degrees.

The 42 degree ocean is responsible for the wide range in temperatures.

No way! Not 20-30 degrees on Friday! I can't believe it! It was so different back in the days when the weather was winter, spring, summer, then fall...now, you never know from one day to the next!

The chance of hitting the upper 60's or hitting the low 70's never happened as forecasted for monday. Because of the strong hold of the layered fog 75% of the day.

It happened to your southwest. Trenton, NJ hit 71 Monday.

And Monique, if you live in the city you'll be waking up to temperatures in the low 30's Friday. The northern suburbs will wake up to temperatures in the 20's. Either way, a gusty breeze will make it feel like it's in the 20's everywhere.

And, yesterday DID clear out on time and we were able to reach 63 degrees in Central Park. Periods of rain and a gusty wind off the ocean will limit high temperatures to the upper 40's today.

Good Morning John, I guess you will be hiking a lot more instead of surfing...Right? You know this weather is tricky lately and the wind blows the curls out my hair!

How are we gonna get locked in a chili pattern...It's spring!

I'll surf when there's waves. it's not too cold anymore!!

Spring is the season where low pressures can cut off from the jetstream and remain nearly stationary. This storm will slowly move into southeastern Canada and sit there. We'll be right on the backside of this storm with a cold northwesterly wind that will stick around.

I got soaked too Monique. My dogs won't go in the backyard when it rains so I have to take them to the park in the rain. I had an umbrella but the wind made the rain fall sideways.

SDS- Producing weather is way different than producing movies. The closest I've come to that is making videos of my friends and I surfing.

Carmen- A good-sized storm will pass just to our south and east tomorrow. It could bring a few flurries or sprinkles to the area tonight and tomorrow morning. Nothing major with this storm.

The cold pattern will hold through Sunday. It will then ease early next week right in time to go into an active pattern. Looks like we could see more than a few storms hit the area with rain starting around Wednesday.

Thank you LoveFoxFive and Chinadoll!! I'll have a detailed five day in my blog weekly. And if anything changes from my original prediction on Monday, I'll post an update.

I can go into way more detail on my blog than we can in 2 and a half minutes on-air. As long as you have the patience to read the post, you'll be all set.
