John_Heyman's Blog

OK folks, I normally take the weekends off, but this storm will be an exceptional one and requires a little OT blogging. I'm going to give my best effort to break down the storm for all of my fellow Fox 5 bloggers.

The rain will arrive late Saturday night into early Sunday morning. By the time most of us wake up Sunday morning, it will be raining steadily and heavily. The heaviest rain with this storm will fall from Sunday morning into Sunday afternoon. As much as 2"-3" of rain could fall across the region by Sunday evening. Northeast winds will pummel the region as well with gusts as high as 50 MPH. The northeasterly wind will pile the Atlantic waters up along the coast causing significant coastal flooding at the times of high tide. Huge waves on top of the storm surge will batter the coast and lead to major beach erosion as well. Suffice to say, Sunday will be the worst day of this storm.

What the storm does Sunday evening will have a huge effect on our weather for Monday into Tuesday. At this point, it appears that the storm will move just to our north into Massachussettes and stall. If this scenario holds true, the worst of the storm will be over. If the storm is to our north, we will have a northwesterly wind which will be quite chilly but relatively dry. The northwesterly wind will continue to bring clouds and a few showers or snow showers, but no steady rain. The northwesterly wind will also blow the Atlantic waters out to sea ending the threat for coastal flooding and major beach erosion.

However, if the storm stalls just to our south and east, the northeasterly wind will continue to wreak havoc on the region. Plenty of Atlantic moisture will continue to stream in causing periods of light rain and drizzle to continue on a steady basis. A persistent northeasterly wind will also continue to pile the Atlantic waters up along the coast causing major coastal flooding and beach erosion. And these problems will be slow to remedy themselves if the storm slowly drifts out to sea to our south and east. The wind, rain, and coastal flooding could last into Tuesday or even Wednesday if this scenario holds true.

Where this storm stalls and our resulting wind direction will be everything with this storm. As long as the storm gets to our north before running out of steam, it will be a one day event with lingering wind and a few showers. If it runs out of steam before reaching us, we could see coastal flooding and beach erosion of historic proportions. So remember, a northwest wind is good. The northeast wind is the killer.

Hey John - I'm a regular Fox blogger. It is said that April borrows a few days from fickle March...guess it is taking quite a chunk from the moody month. Sincerely hopeb that Mother Nature gives us a break, putting winter in its place and letting Spring shine thru. I find the most interesting observation about a storm is the crowded supermarkets...it's not really about an empty "fridge".it's about eating to overcome the boredom of being indoors. Lawnmower or shovel? Thanks...Lori / Staten Island

The latest model guidance is still bringing the storm just to our north sometime Sunday night. This is good news as the wind will come around to a drier direction if the storm indeed makes it north of our area.

The bad news is, we're running out of breathing room! If current guidance is currect, the low will come to a grinding halt very close to our area in northern Connecticut. That means there isn't much room for error on the models part and a stall to our south is still possible. Again, major coastal flooding will result if this is the case. This storm needs to be monitored closely!!

Beachman?! My kind of name!! The waves will get very big for this storm, perhaps as high as 12 feet or so. Unfortunately, 25-35 MPH winds will make it a bit bumpy and tricky to surf. But I like the challenge.

Open ocean seas will likely exceed 20 feet with this storm!!

aahhh..sounds like my kind of weekend. Went to the supermarket to load up on snacks and stuff..got some popcorn for us to pop and eat during the Sopranos..

By the way, Lori was right...the supermarket WAS A ZOO!

John and beachman..enjoy your waves, but BE CAREFUL!

Enjoy the weekend everyone...and enjoy the sound of the rain against your window pane..

Much of the area will see 3"-4" of rain today. Flood warnings are already in effect and will remain so through at least midnight.

The wind and seas are just kicking up so this morning's high tide was not nearly as bad as this evening's will be. High tide for ocean beaches will be around 7:00PM. By this time, 6 to 10 foot waves will also be pounding the shoreline on top of the storm surge causing major erosion.

A high wind warning is also in effect for most of the region through midnight. 30-40MPH winds with gusts to 60MPH will be common late this afternoon as the peak of the storm wallops the area.

Model guidance has been consistent overnight bringing the storm just to our north just after midnight tonight. Again, this is of the utmost importance to the region as winds will switch to a drier northwesterly direction. This will also blow coastal waters back out to sea and allow tides to drop.

However, each model run is stalling the storm closer and closer to our area. As a result, we'll hang on to high winds, clouds, and occasional showers. The steady, heavy rain and high tides will likely exit the area by Monday. The focus of the storm at this point will shift to New England who will take the brunt of this storm.

With that being said..Although I am loving this weather, I do feel for all those affected by the rain. Many households in my area are suffering from a power outage. Luckily i'm not one of them---BE SAFE EVERYONE
