My handsome boss Jim asked me recently if I'd be interested in going to Denver and Minneapolis later this summer to cover the political conventions.

I didn't really need to think about it. I've never been a politics writer, but that's not an opportunity you turn down.

I come from more of a sports background, but this is a great chance to cover the grandest race of them all, the Kentucky Derby of politics, perhaps the Final Four of a most important election year.

Covering politics should be more fun than covering sports. Sure, I enjoy watching sporting events involving my favorite teams more than I like watching politicians speak from behind podiums or address town-hall gatherings. But there's one major difference -- politics is real life. Sports are merely games whose results should have no real impact on our lives.

But a presidential election has real consequences. So I'm going to have to really know my stuff.

My get-smart-quick process started a month ago when I began reading Barack Obama's "The Audacity Of Hope." When I finish it, I plan to read John McCain's "Faith Of My Fathers." I hope to have both of them read before the conventions.

I'm also visiting blogs and watching more news programs at home. But I'll take any tips from you if you have sources that you recommend.

So today is kind of like syllabus day. No real lesson or rant scheduled; I just wanted to introduce myself and let you know that I'll always welcome your comments.

I'm a left-leaning employee of FOX -- how'd that happen? -- so I expect plenty of, shall we say, interesting conversation. I don't ask that you agree with me. I've always preferred a peaceful exchange, so my only requirement is that when you do express any contrarian views, do so respectfully, and treat this space like your mother's living room; let's keep it clean.

I am so thrilled that someone is going to cover the political speeches and such without being trained by others with their stale, rehearsed, robotic ways. Seems that listening to the reports is like reading the 2nd romance novel - just the same format as the first.

I hope you go into it with a fresh approach, and once in a while, remind people that it is just one person's viewpoint, which every report is - well, unless you have multiple personalities in you or if you are bi-polar - think about it! Or very intuitive.

But, John, I would like every politician to be taped up with a polygraph machine when they make speeches. Wouldn't that be a hoot - and short speeches.

Glad to see you are also looking at the background of the candidates and aware that they write as they want others to see them.

I would like to see reporters also follow up with the elected candidates to see if they walk their talk.

And we all lived happily ever after.....

Do well, Aili

It's good to see a fresh face with charm and personality covering politics!

Write down your questions in advance. I heard they turn on the heat to make it too hot to think clearly so the press is not sharp enough to ask the "dagger-questions." You will be prepared for that and soon they will call you "John P. Leeeze"!

Good Luck!
Jane

Thanks y'all for the comments. Aili, I'll try to remember to pack my polygraph machine!

Truly though, I can't help but bring a fresh approach because covering politics is new for me.

And Jane, I'll watch out for that heat.

Dre, I've got two years of being a nice guy in New York and I'm still here!

Have a great day, gang, and thanks for writing.

I've been in news for about 15 years. I've written news/sports/entertainment
/reviews/columns/features
for daily and periodical print, TV, radio and for the last eight years, online. I've also done some on-air work, and I've picked up the photography bug along the way too. My varied interests have just recently included politics, so this convention blog is my current challenge. Now following politics is a huge educational experience for me, so feel free to share your insights at any time. Thanks for reading.
